Character Information
Name: Beauregard
Series: Critical Role (Campaign 2)
Appearance: Official art!
Age: Canon is uncertain; suggested in her early 20's, assumed somewhere from 21-23.
Canon Point: Episode 11x03 (S2E28) "Within The Nest", during the rest before the assault on the Sour Nest.
Canon History: Official Wiki link, episode summaries. There are also recap summaries here; specifically important episodes to her are episode 4, episode 18, and episode 24. Finally, a clip of her main backstory reveal can be found here.

Personality: The first thing you need to know about Beau is that she submits to no man. Or woman. Or... anyone, really. Beauregard is a rebel; she tells an npc that she got her name because her parents wanted a son, and she's been fighting back against that legacy ever since. She's shown to have numerous issues with authority, from the big to the small- her teachers and trainers in the Cobalt Soul were known to hate her for her unwillingness to work with them, and she's even turned this vitriol on other party members who have made decisions without asking her. In one specific situation, she weaponized Caleb's trauma against him (that he told her in confidence) when he started acting like he could delegate the party. It doesn't matter if she would have agreed (and in one case, she later did)- but she can't handle decisions being made behind her back, however small. On the flip side, she's also been shown to make sure the entire party gets credit when they accomplish a goal, possibly because she doesn't want anyone to stand out especially higher than the others. Ultimately, Beau is a person who wants to be in control of her own destiny and is vocal about this.

However, for someone who's intent on piloting her own life, she isn't very good at deciding what that life's going to be. Her player (Marisha Ray) has talked a lot in the past about how Beau is very directionless, and has very few long-term plans. Most of her motivation can be summed up in an early-on quote: "Do whatever you want, but if it fucks with my shit we're going to have issues". She ended up with the party at large after stepping in when a fisherman was getting attacked by a giant snake, and has just kind of been following ever since. Marisha has also noted on Talks Machina, their discussion show, that Beau never really had friends before this; while she was a local contact and guide for criminal activity, she would only get to know people for as long as they were passing through, leading to the party being her longest term connection since her parents and the monks (of which, we have previously noted, do not like her very much).

As is probably apparent from all that, Beau is incredibly bad at being nice, talking to people, and being reasonable in most cases. Fjord and Nott have made numerous jokes about how she never genuinely smiles, and she's been warned by nearly every member of the party to "be nice" in situations where they'll be meeting new people they need to work with. The thing is, Beau is very rarely mean on purpose (though she has no qualms about using it to her advantage, as noted above). In general, she's simply bad at restraining herself for the comfort of others. She's direct to a fault, picking apart inconsistencies when people try to lie to her without a piece of remorse, including when it's very obvious others don't want to talk about the issue. This shows itself most when others open up in pieces about their backstory; while some members of the party may be respectful enough to let a rough situation lie, Beau picks and picks until she gets her answer or the situation explodes. This is why she ends up getting Caleb's backstory out of him- he asks her for a favor to get into a library, and before she does it she insists on hearing all of his trauma because she wants to know. This also expresses itself in her violence- Beau has no qualms about killing or fighting to get what she wants, and in some cases, has been described to "enjoy the rush". In episode 30, after her training mentor calls down two additional helpers for a sparring session, she excitedly asks if she can kill them once she's won, disturbing her trainer and the other helpers. Marisha has also talked previously about how she loves the rush that fighting gives her, and may start altercations just for her own amusement and to feel strong in a given situation.

Finally, what this leads into is a lot of repression of her own emotions and an inability to communicate about her issues. Because Beau isn't used to having close connections, and she was antagonistic to her father for most of their relationship, she's horrible at expressing herself and connecting to her own emotions. She also very badly flirts with a number of women over the course of the campaign, including trying to get to know Yasha by asking if she "enjoys grass". Her lowest stat by far is charisma and boy, does it show in her interpersonal interactions.

That said, this is something she knows about herself and wants to change- after Mollymauk's death, she reveals she was skeptical about his happy to lucky nature and his vows to leave things better than he found them, but that she wants to stop enjoying destroying people's lives and "do some good in the world". How that manifests, of course, remains to be seen.

Abilities: Beau is a D&D Monk, level 5, under the Way of the Cobalt Soul. Her character sheet for this level can be found here and a breakdown of her monk specialty is here, as it's a homebrewed class from Matt Mercer and therefore not in any of the core D&D books. To preface this explanation if anyone's not versed in D&D, there are a few abilities every player has. In a turn, a character has by default Movement and an Action. Some characters also have Bonus Actions (1 per turn). Characters also get one Reaction a round (the time it takes to get around initiative order back to their turn), in which something can affect them when it's not their turn. In general, one set of actions by a character (which could include a move, action, and bonus) lasts around six seconds. This is the default for all characters, though certain classes get different exceptions- see the stuff for monks below.

As far as her abilities go, while she doesn't have magic, Monks do have access to things called ki points that allow them to add special feats. Ki points work like a bonus action, but can have as many stacked on one turn as they have to spend. I'll lay out these abilities below. Monks get as many ki points as their level per short rest, so Beau has 5 that she can regain with an hour of rest at any time. Her current ki abilities are:

  • Flurry Of Blows: Immediately after Beau takes the Attack action, she can spend 1 ki point to make two unarmed strikes as a bonus action.
  • Patient Defense: She can spend 1 ki point to take the Dodge action as a bonus action on her turn.
  • Step of the Wind: Beau can spend 1 ki point to take the Disengage or Dash action as a bonus action on her turn, and her jump distance is doubled for the turn (6 seconds).
  • Deflect Missiles: She can use her reaction to deflect or catch the missile when she's hit by a ranged weapon attack. When she do so, the damage Beau takes from the attack is reduced by 1d10 + her Dexterity modifier (4) + her monk level (5); this essentially translates to most minor ranged attacks, like shortbows. If the damage is reduced to 0, Beau can catch the missile if it is small enough for her to hold in one hand and she has at least one hand free. If she catches a missile in this way, she can spend 1 ki point to make a ranged attack with the weapon or piece of ammunition she just caught, as part of the same reaction. This essentially means that if someone shoots an arrow at her, she can catch it in midair and use a ki point to throw it back as a reaction attack.
  • Stunning Strike: Beau can interfere with the flow of ki in an opponent’s body. When she hits another creature with a melee weapon attack, she can spend 1 ki point to attempt a stunning strike. The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of her next turn (Anywhere from 15-30 seconds).

In addition, she gains a few bonuses against being a regular joe from her class:

  • Punch... girl?: Beau has trained with monks for years to be able to hit things real good, and real hard. When she's only got her staff with no armor and no shield, her unarmed punches do 1d6 damage. (For reference, a non-monk's punch is 1+STR mod, so usually no more than 2 or 3 points of damage). In addition, when she attacks with a weapon, she can make an unarmed strike as a bonus action. So she can whack something with a staff and then one-two punch it in about six seconds.
  • Gotta Go Fast: Beau gets an extra 10 feet of movement vs the average (30 ft every 6 seconds). This is on her sheet as her standard speed.
  • Soar Like A Butterfly: Beau can use her reaction when she falls to reduce any falling damage by an amount equal to five times her monk level (so up to 25 HP). In 5e, a creature takes 1d6 fall damage for every 10 feet; this essentially means she can drop 40-50 feet without incident or damage.
  • Sting Like A Bee: Beau gets 2 attacks per turn. Yes, this means in one turn she can do 2 attacks, make two unarmed bonus strikes, and spend 2 ki points to hit them a total of twice with a weapon and six times with her fists in six seconds. She's Very Fast.

And finally, she has the Sentinel feat, meaning:

  • When Beau hits a creature with an opportunity attack, the creature’s speed becomes 0 for the rest of the turn. How this translates is that if someone tries to get past her and she gets an attack of opportunity (an attack given when an enemy gets in proximity) and she hits, they have to stop moving immediately.
  • Creatures within 5 feet of her provoke opportunity attacks from her even if they take the Disengage action before leaving her reach. So if they're within 5 feet, they have to fight her, even if they're trying to leave with a feat or ability.
  • When a creature within 5 feet of Beau makes an attack against a target other than her (and that target doesn’t have this feat), she can use her reaction to make a melee weapon attack against the attacking creature. So if a creature attacks a nearby ally, she can use her reaction to smack that thing.

She also speaks at least 3 languages, as shown on her character sheet (Common, Halfling, Deep Speech, and has been shown to translate/read sentences in Elvish though may not be fluent) and is proficient in simple weapons, shortswords, and thieves tools (meaning she can pick locks if she has a kit; she's not coming into game with one). If you're wondering what she's bad at, it's emotional honesty, but she sure can hit shit real good.

I don't actually have recommendations on nerfs on this one- possibly taking her ki points from a short rest regen to once per day might knock down some of this if you're so inclined to stop magic stuff. Otherwise most of her things are in her physical ability, but I will defer to your judgement.

Inventory:
  • Quarterstaff (her "Beau" staff; the staff shown in her character art.)
  • Healer's kit
  • Brewer's Kit
  • Goggles of Night (a pair of goggles that, when worn, give the benefits of Darkvision. Have been shown to stun if worn in daylight/bright light.)
  • A sleeveless reversible cloak (one side is brown, the other is blue)
  • Courting of the Crick (smutty historical/romance novel. Banned in the Empire. Probably ruined by the water on entry.)
  • Boots of the Vigilant (semi-magic item; adds a d8 to initiative rolls once per day)
  • A set of throwing stars (function as darts; I don't know how many she has, we'll say 20)
  • Molly's marked "fortune-telling" deck; contains a set of custom tarot cards, noticeably missing The Moon.
  • Summer's Dance Scimitar (a +1 Scimitar that can cast the spell Misty Step.)
  • Set of regular clothes (aka what she's wearing)
  • A set of traveling basics; a few day's rations, a bedroll, a waterskin, and a few feet of hempen rope.
  • Pocket bacon. Yes, like two strips of bacon in her pocket. It's Pocket Bacon (TM).
