Character Name: Beauregard "Beau" Lionett
Age: Mid 20's
Canon: Critical Role
Canon point: Episode 141, after the fight with Trent but before the party splits.
History: Wiki link!

Personality:
  • Rebellious: The first thing you need to know about Beau is that she submits to no man. Or woman. Or... anyone, really. Beauregard is a rebel; she tells an NPC early-on that she got her name because her parents wanted a son, and she's been fighting back against that legacy ever since. She's shown to have numerous issues with authority, from the big to the small- her teachers and trainers in the Cobalt Soul were known to hate her for her unwillingness to work with them, and she's even turned this vitriol on other party members who have made decisions without asking her. In one specific situation, she weaponized Caleb's trauma against him (that he told her in confidence) when he started acting like he could delegate the party. It doesn't matter if she would have agreed (and in one case, she later did)- she can't handle decisions being made behind her back that impact her in any way. Finally, despite being incredibly high-ranked in her world's version of the CIA, she got there by breaking every rule in the book and exposing the corruption of the people above her. Ultimately, she will take down injustice or anything that oppresses others unfairly, and is willing to take up arms whenever she finds it.

  • Determined: Beau is the kind of person who never lets something lie, even when she really, really should, and has no patience for the comfort of strangers in getting what she needs or wants. She finds enjoyment in picking apart inconsistencies when people try to lie to her, including when it's very obvious others don't want to talk about the issue. This shows itself most when others open up in pieces about their backstory; while some members of the party may be respectful enough to let an obviously rough situation lie, Beau picks and picks until she gets her answer or the situation explodes. For example, she ends up being the first in the party to hear about Caleb's backstory trauma, as he asks her for a favor to get into a library and before she does it she insists on her answers to satisfy her curiosity. Similarly, Beau has found herself on the recieving end of some physical violence multiple times because she simply won't stop when someone says so, or sometimes getting the party targeted by a monster because she simply wouldn't leave something be that she wants to investigate. Ultimately she will get where she needs to be, no matter how long it takes or how messy it goes in the middle, and giving up is simply never an option.

  • Smart and Cunning: In tandem with the above, Beau is incredibly intelligent (with or without her smarts-boosting headband), and over the campaign has learned how to make powerful allies and get what she (and the party) needs. Ironically, she's better at deception than persuasion, meaning she will often lie to convince someone or lead them into what she wants, but when she is honest she is often successful. She once convinces a powerful wizard to form an alliance with them, saying: "We all know corruption runs rampant in both the Empire and the Clovis Concord. I don't want anything to do with that...I just want the truth." At the beginning of the campaign she was much more straightforward and had few goals, leading to her actively refusing to use her smarts out of the desire to rebel. Since then, she's learned how to pull her punches just enough to be tactical- she sees and knows the value in allies and information. She also takes very, very detailed notes and has shown to recall even slight details with ease if she's read or heard them before.

  • Brash: Beau is a strong personality and will not be polite or kind to anyone unless they've properly earned it- and that is entirely based on her opinion of 'earned'. When she gets an audience with the King of the Empire, while she does give him the information because it benefits her, she also openly curses and tells her opinion of his advisors and which ones she hates the most. If she does not like you, you'll know, and she will not give up on that until you've paid penance or are dead. This angry personality seems to be important to her, as she could easily use her smarts to be charismatic and cunning, but instead uses her smarts and strength to collect blackmail, threaten others, or make herself too useful to remove. Being able to be valued and say what she wants is something that's important to her, and even if it makes her appear a certain way, she refuses to be anything else but exactly who she is.

  • Loyal: On the flip side of her rudeness towards others, once you're on Beau's side you're on her side and it'll take a hell of a thing to remove you. Beau's childhood was incredibly isolating and for a long time she struggled to relate to people, make friends, or allow herself to be vulnerable for fear of rejection. When she did finally open up to the Nein after they saved her life and were patient with her rudeness, she became incredibly attached, and will fight against anything that might hurt them or things they care about. At one point, the group finds a witch who had cursed one of their party members, and demanded something of them to lift it. Beau was fully ready to allow the witch to take her friends and family away from her because their happiness was more paramount, and she was certain that she would mess something up if she stuck with them too long. This didn't end up having to come to pass due to a great trick by another person, but even as others were celebrating Beau found herself a bit lost because these people were actually willing to go the extra mile to keep her around. Time and time again Beau shows that when you're her people, she will go through death, destruction, and ruin to make sure you're happy and safe.

Suitability: Beau has been doing illegal smuggling since she was a teenager and since then is not only a trained fighter, but has fought against continuous regular and cosmic horrors. She also once read a book she was told very much not to read and then began to be haunted by eyeballs that started appearing the more she unraveled the mystery, so she's already 20% of the way to an Eye avatar without even trying. She can't resist a mystery and ultimately wants to help people, so sure, she'll hop in on whatever the hell is going on here (especially since her friend Caduceus is already on board).

Powers/Abilities: This is going to be long, so bear with me.

Beau is a level 16 D&D styled monk, with her character sheet being found here. The thing with monks as a class is that most of their abilities are explicitly not meant to be magic, but simply the result of study, training, and practice. I'll be attempting to divide this section into things that make sense for her to keep as just being a trained and practiced fighter, and stuff that will count as 'magic' even if D&D wouldn't describe it as such.

To start, stuff that I believe is within the range of a regular person:
  • Speaks/understands 6 languages- Common, Halfling, Elvish, Dwarvish, Deep Speech, and Undercommon, all of which will likely be useless here. Common is effectively D&D English, so she'll come in knowing that but not other Earth languages.
  • Sentinel: In D&D, this means the user can stop others from moving if they succeed an opportunity attack. In a regular encounter, this would be more akin to Beau's understanding of pressure points in the body allowing her when in melee to hit a person in a way to stop them from moving for a few seconds if they try to move out of her range.
  • Observant: Can read lips as long as she can see them and they're speaking a language she understands.
  • Stunning Strike: In D&D this would allow her to stun someone on a saving throw until the next turn; in this it would be akin to the Sentinel feat, where she has an idea of where you would hit someone to cause them to be woozy for about 6 seconds, but doesn't always work.
  • Patient Defense: If she's not actively attacking someone but is engaged in combat, she's very observant to her surroundings and it'll be difficult to get the jump on her.
  • Evasion: She's slippery and hard to hit on account of being fast as hell. Her speed in combat equates to having her natural running speed be ~12 mph, so in general she's just really fast as a result of years of training and never skipping leg day.

Abilities that are typically mundane, but can be a 'power' to be used to it's full potential:
  • Deflect Missiles: She can sometimes catch arrows and other basic projectiles. Canon says this works on bullets but I'm gonna say that's not a thing unless magic is involved, but other slower moving things thrown at her (arrows, rocks, ect) is fair game.
  • Stillness of Mind: In D&D, this is used to shake off the status effects of charms or fear; here, this is more of a nod to her ability to meditate and clear her mind after years of monistic teachings. Essentially she's very good at centering herself and getting herself back to action, even if she's scared of under a magical effect, as long as she has a moment to collect herself. If she were to tap into a power, she could shake off even more 'magical' effects or potentially Entity influence from another character, but that will require magic.
  • Slow Fall: By D&D standards, Beau is supposed to be able to take 80 "fall damage" without getting hurt. In 5e, a creature takes 1d6 fall damage for every 10 feet, so this means she could feasibly fall anywhere from 130 to 800 feet without getting hurt, as she 'catches herself' in some way. I'm going to say that it's feasible for her to do this if she has appropriate places to do so (i.e. if she's falling by a wall, she can use that to slow herself down by doing cool parkour tricks or punching a fist into the wall). If she's just free-falling with nothing she can touch, it would be a power usage for this to apply.
  • Unarmored Movement: D&D classifies this as being able to move across vertical surfaces and liquid surfaces the same as walking. I'd say she can probably run on a wall for a second or two, but the running across water thing is most certainly a magical ability.
  • Jade eye tattoo- To make a long story short, Beau has a tattoo that's magically imbibed to increase her Wisdom score. This isn't something 'used' as much as it's part of her now so I'm not really sure if that necessitates a curse or nerf or if she'll simply feel smarter/wiser when using it as a 'power'. Otherwise it's purely cosmetic as a sick-ass tattoo of an eye on the back of her head in bright green, so you know, that's not obvious or anything.

Abilities that are absolutely magic and would require Entity-feeding for use:
  • Ki points: Ki points are explained in D&D as extra 'pushes' of power that monks can rely on to do extra things in battle. Some of these are in the above sections because they're just messing with D&D mechanics and could be done by a normal person; these remaining would require power usage.
    • Flurry of Blows: The ability to momentarily move unnaturally fast to get an extra hit or two in during an attack.
    • Step of the Wind: Double her speed and jump distance for a few moments. In canon she's been shown to use this to be able to go ~30 mph for about 6 seconds, and can continue to use it on subsequent turns if she keeps spending points.
    • Extract Aspects: If she punches someone, she can learn their physical vulnerabilities, weaknesses, and immunities. Good for figuring out if something's immune to poison or if you probably shouldn't be setting a wax person on fire.
    • Extort Truth: Beau can force people to tell the truth for one minute per usage of this ability; it's defined as the user is not able to speak "a deliberate lie" and can avoid answering or be evasive about the answer to avoid it.
    • Ki-Empowered Strikes: She can imbue her punches with magic so she can hit things that you should not be able to solidly connect with, like ghosts or smoke.
  • Purity of Body: Immunity to disease or poison, treated as a magical blocker to flush it from her system if encountered.
  • Tongue of the Sun and Moon: Understanding of all spoken languages, and any creature that understands a language can understand what she says.
  • Timeless Body: Can survive without food and water and cannot be aged via magic.

In general, she's also pretty dang smart and keeps great notes, which will be very useful here.

Entity Affinity: Sorry to stack another on top but Beau is solidliy tied to The Eye. She's an investigator, part-time archivist, and untagles cursed secrets that get her noticed by hellish entities beyond the veil. It's only natural for her.

Inventory:
Non-magical items:
  • Her Bō staff
  • Bracers of Defense (they're metal bracers, no magic)
  • Boots of the Vigilant, in canon they can give a speed boost but here they'll just be boots
  • A number of smutty romance novels
  • A set of throwing stars
  • Just an inordinate amount of ball bearings
  • A couple of fireworks
  • The clothing aspects of her winter outfit upon her arrival, along with the other parts of her Xhorhaus outfit in her bag.
  • Pocket bacon. Yes, like two strips of bacon in her pocket. It's Pocket Bacon (TM).

Magical items with curses written:
  • Maelstrom Gloves, which shoot short-range lightning once per day
    • Personally I think seeing someone shoot lightning from their hands is probably enough to make anyone shit their pants, but I'm thinking for this one anyone who is seen using it has their body light up with Lichtenberg patterns that linger for a bit after it's usage. More usage means some of them may start becoming permanent. As in canon, would only function a maximum of once per day.
  • Cape of the Moutebank, which allows the use of the spell dimension door once per day
    • The flavortext on this item is that it 'smells faintly of brimstone', which makes me think this is a Desolation-aligned item. It would allow transportation but instead of smoke would do so in fire, causing whoever used it to retain burns from exposure. Still would only work once per day and is guaranteed to take your eyebrows right off.

Magical items I'm not sure how to handle/if they need a curse:
  • Goggles of Night, grants darkvision up to 60 ft
    • This is a magic item in D&D because there's no such thing as night-vision goggles, but they should function about the same. If these could be turned into those/function as tech that would be fine, but if they retain magic my idea for their curse would be paranoia; you can see in the dark but the shadows move and you feel like you're being watched by something granting you the 'sight'.
  • The Headband of Intellect, sets intelligence score to 19
    • This is a hard one because it's mechianical to D&D by nature; canon describes it as 'inscribing clarity' or that it supposedly makes you 'smarter', but only if attuned. To our knowledge she's not even wearing it to be smarter by the end of canon so if this is gonna be an issue/a cursed item she can just lose it, as it's effectively cosmetic by this point.
  • The Belaborer staff
    • This staff is largely just a silver quarterstaff, but it has "charges" that can cause users to take force damage and be pushed away. Typically "charges" in D&D are magical but we're not given any information in any other way about how this functions. I assume using it without activating this feature would be mundane, but if the feature is invoked it would probably cause some kind of curse, though I don't really know what it is. I'd also be alright with it losing this ability and simply being a silver quarterstaff.
